The slot machines is the ideal option for wideouts that are quick, as they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a solid option to be a sleeper for this season since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to play on more downfield targets. On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime packages and then placing McDuffie on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been an enormous advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are equally good. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who are on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. In actuality, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the other players in this ranking however, he's highly skilled and is a perfect fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who is able to put huge numbers on targets of both kinds, is another example. He's among the top players in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic player who can play contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a key member of his team's defensive unit. On the contrary, he's been unable to stop passes from the outside and has been able to give a negative EPA against these types of targets. This is a result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
