How to Replace an audi a1 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm audi tt key fob not working sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor audi new Key (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi Key copy since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi a3 key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
