How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available particularly if you're looking at an Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi key Copy since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common part that is found across the audi replacement key cost uk 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
