Overview

Newcastle is one of the more popular destinations on the higher education map. The university is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities able to attract the most academically gifted students. The university is very popular with the privately educated, who make up more than one in five entrants, and it recruits strongly from across the UK. Students from the North East made up just 22.6% of last year's intake - not so far ahead of the 17.1% who came from London and the South East. The Royal Victoria Infirmary is home to one of the UK's leading medical schools with outstanding modern facilities. The university's Centre for Ageing and Inequalities offers world-class expertise in an area of intense national and global focus as society wrestles with the consequences of increasing longevity. Its position in our ranking - and others like it - is depressed by consistently low scores in the National Student Survey. Even though the university's graduates are among the best paid, with three in four ending up in high-skilled jobs, they score their experience modestly. And last year's Teaching Excellence Framework outcomes confirmed that view, awarding student experience a bronze, when student outcomes and the university's overall rating earned silver.

Paying the bills

The university has extended the life of its Undergraduate Support scholarship, introduced in 2021-22, due to the ongoing impacts of the cost-of-living crisis. Aimed at students from homes with a household income of between £35,001 and £40,000, it pays £500 in each year of study. The scholarship complements the support provided by Newcastle's Opportunity scholarship to students from lower-income homes. More than 2,800 students got the top award of £2,000 per year, paid to those from homes with an income of no more than £25,000, while a further 932 from homes where income was between £25,001 and £35,000 got a £1,000 annual award. Hardship funds were increased by 8% in the academic year just ended, providing more than £1.7m of emergency assistance. Nearly 700 students benefited from participation bursaries worth up to £280 to allow students to get involved with activities they might otherwise not be able to afford, such as sports, clubs and societies. The redevelopment of the Castle Leazes halls has removed catered accommodation from the university's offer, but nearly 3,500 self-catered rooms remain. Prices begin at £4,802 for a 40-week contract, rising to a maximum of £9,776 for a 49-week tenancy.

What's new?

The £110m redevelopment of Newcastle's iconic Stephenson Building is due to be completed later this year. Home to generations of engineering students, the new hub will see student engineers, designers and researchers work alongside academics and entrepreneurs to tackle key global challenges, by developing cleaner technologies, smarter cities and more advanced medical technology, for example. The new Stephenson Building will contain a Maker Space; a student-centred zone for interdisciplinary collaborations, creativity and entrepreneurship; and three research hubs focused on digital manufacturing, biomedical engineering and 다파벳 sustainable propulsion.

Admissions, teaching and student support

More than one third of admissions at Newcastle received a contextual offer in September 2023 - a significant proportion for a university generally asking for high grades. Eligible students get offers two A-level grades (or equivalent) below the standard offer. This can rise to three grades for students from under-represented groups who participate in supported entry programmes, such as the long-running Partners scheme. Students admitted through this route get ongoing support during their time at Newcastle. Participating in Partners can reduce the entry requirement for medicine from AAA to BBB - one of the most competitive offers for medicine in the UK. Among those eligible for the Partners scheme to date are students living in the 40% of postcodes with the lowest rates of progression to higher education or the highest levels of deprivation; ethnic minority students from state schools; pupils attending state schools with below-average attainment; those who have received free school meals; carers and care-experienced applicants; and those whose family have served in the military. Treatment and education come together in one of Newcastle's initiatives to support student mental health. Its Psychological Therapies Training and Research Clinic offers cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to students suffering from anxiety and depression, and involves fully trained and trainee students and staff from clinical disciplines within the school of psychology working with student patients. Wellbeing advisers are based within academic schools to provide a first point of contact and can refer students on to central provision such as a counselling service, as well as other specialist support.
